"El Puma" was born in a humble family on January 14, 1943 in Caracas, the last of the 11 Spanish merchants, José Antonio Rodríguez and Ana González.

He studied at the Caracas Industrial Technical School to train electricians.

As a teenager, he was part of the Los Zeppys group, where he was a vocalist and subject of the "The Platters" group.

He is recognized not only for his music career, but also for his participation in Venezuelan telenovels. In 1995, he founded the first Venezuelan music video channel: Bravo TV, whose name will change to Puma TV, which promoted artists, models, singers and everything that was related to the entertainment world.

On May 10, 2004, he accepted US citizenship without renouncing Venezuelan citizenship.

El Puma has been married since 1966 with Venezuelan singer Lilo Morillo, whom he met in 1965. In 1996 he married Carolina Pérez. He is the father of Génesis Rodríguez, Lilibeth Morillo and Liliana Morillo, singer and actress.
