RePain works by placing ten different translucent inks in thin layers, providing AI with the ideal stack needed to generate the intended colors. The team also nurtured AI paintings to help determine the colors needed for specific color areas, adjusting lighting conditions to ensure consistency. The technology also relies on halftone (where you create images using ink points) to better match colors.
Technology is currently not able to restore surface texture and reflection, so you do not get a matte or shiny look of some paintings. And of course you will not get the Louvre's masterpiece in the near future – at present, the output is postcard size. However, if and in what form it will fluctuate, RePaint may be subject to extensive appeal. Your home might have more authentic Monet or Van Gogh reproductions, but museums can protect valuable original, whenever possible reproducing reproductions.
