New antibiotic offers hope for "super gonorrhea"

The resistant gonorrhea resistant to antibiotics It has become a scary prospect in the United States, raising concerns that everybody may have to live with Sexually Transmitted Bacteria.

But now there are reasons for hope. One antibiotic pills In the initial clinical studies, the newly developed is effective against gonorrhea.

Zoliflodacin was effectively treated gonorrhea infections urinary tract and genital tract and rectum, researchers say.

"Gonorrhea has become resistant to all the antibiotics that have ever been used against it, so now we have only our last class of antibiotics that can be used," said lead researcher Dr. Stefania Taylor, Infectious Disease Specialist. New Orleans

"It is very encouraging as new potential antibiotic"added Taylor, Medical Director of the Louisiana State University and CrescentCare Sexual Wellness Center.

The results of the study appear in the November 8 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. In the United States, the level of gonorrhea has increased significantly in recent years.

In 2017, more than 555,600 cases were reported across the country, up 18 percent from last year, Dr Susana Blank, Assistant Commissioner for Health and Mental Health New York, said. And from 2013 to 2017 gonorrhea increased by 67 percent.

"It's an infection that is rising rapidly in the United States," Blank warned. "We've seen some significant increases, it's rarely deadly, but it can have a significant impact on quality of life."

Currently, people with gonorrhea are being treated with ceftriaxone, the only antibiotic that is still effective against bacteria, told Taylor.

"We know that gonorrhea he has incredible ability to develop resistance to antibiotics, "said Blank. In the current situation, difficult gonorrhea is a real possibility. "

Untreated gonorrhea can lead to infertility in humans, in addition to pelvic inflammatory diseases, ectopic pregnancies and destructive arthritis, Blank said. Infants exposed to gonorrhea through infected mothers may be blind.

"Gonorrhea also greatly facilitates the transmission of HIV infection among sexual partners," said Blan, editor of the editorial, published with the new research findings.

In this clinical study, with 141 patients, zoliflodacin was almost as effective as ceftriaxone.

Zoliflodacin cured 96% of genital and urinary tract infections and 100% rectal infection compared with 100% efficacy in ceftriaxone, researchers reported.

The new antibiotic had difficulty with gonorrhea infection in the neck; a higher dose of 3 grams produced only 82 percent of infections compared with 100% efficacy in ceftriaxone.

"Historically, this is the way to gonorrhea he has reacted to the neck, "said Taylor. It has always been difficult to deal with. "

The most commonly reported side effects were gastrointestinal disorders, and none of the patients was reluctant to give up the new medicine, Taylor said. One limitation was that only 12 women participated in the study.

This was the second of the three clinical trials necessary to confirm zoliflodacine in the United States. UU The three-phase trials will begin next year, Taylor said. If these studies are conducted, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) UU would have data available to assess and validate antibiotics in 2020. The Agency has already identified antibiotics for accelerated treatment.

Although the development of zoliflodacin is encouraging, more antibiotics should be developed to further prevent gonorrhea and other antibiotic-resistant bacteria, said Taylor and Blank.

"Although this antibiotic was perfect, we know that gonorrhea will overcome it," Blank said. "We need backups, we do not know how quickly they will take over."

Doctors and public health authorities should also continue their efforts to detect and treat gonorrhea, Blank said. People who are sexually active should use condoms to prevent gonococcal transmission that spreads disproportionately among black, Spanish and American men.

"Control gonorrhea because it requires a lot of related activity for the population, "said Blank.

Clinical research was partly funded by a zoolophlodacin fellow, Entasis Therapeutics, a subsidiary of AstraZeneca.
