Patients with chronic illness and cancer have a higher risk of developing pneumonia, the Korean Infectious Disease Institute recommends vaccination against pneumococcal disease^9.16

Pneumonia in Korea, the fourth leading cause of death in Korea⁵

November 12 is World Pneumonia Day.¹⁷

World Pneumonia Day 2009 began to protect children from pneumonia and seek out the best prevention and treatment of pneumonia. Over the past decade, the World Coalition for Childhood Pneumonia, has conducted various campaigns around the world.¹⁷ In recent years, elderly patients have experienced an increase in pneumonia mortality, especially among adults.¹⁸

The pneumon mortality rate has more than tripled in recent years (9.4% in 2007 and 37.8% in 2017), indicating a sharp increase in mortality among the 10 major deaths among Koreans.^1-5 Pneumonia last year (2017) was the fourth leading cause of death in Korea,⁵ It is the eighth consecutive year, one of the highest rates of mortality.^1-5 In particular, the 40-year-old pneumonia mortality rate was only 1.5 per 100,000 people, but it rose sharply from 50 to 6.2, reaching 846.7 people at the age of 80.⁵

Diabetes, COPD and other chronic diseases and cancer patients experience the immune system, the frequency of pneumonia is 9.8 times higher⁹

The prevalence of chronic diseases is also rapidly increasing in the 1950s,⁸ Patients with chronic diseases have a 9.8-fold increase in the risk of developing pneumonia in healthy adults.⁹ (Chronic heart disease 3,8-5,1 times, chronic lung diseases 7,7-9,8 times, diabetes 2,8-3,1 times)⁹ In the case of diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), most patients account for more than 50 generations^10.11 The importance of pneumonia prevention is also increasing. The Korean Diabetes Association and the Korean Tuberculosis and Bleeding Association recommend vaccination against pneumococcal disease in patients with diabetes mellitus and COPD.^12.13

Patients with cancer and immune patients also had a 7.1-fold increase in the risk of developing pneumonia.⁹ Two out of every 100 patients undergoing cancer surgery developed post-operative pneumonia and the frequency of pneumonia was 7.97% in patients undergoing lung cancer surgery.^14[1] In addition, according to the 2017 mortality statistics, pneumonia mortality is 37.8 per 100,000 people, which is higher than that of lung cancer (35.1 per 100,000 people).¹⁴

Korean Public Infectious Diseases, Chronic Illness Patients Over the age of 65 and over the age of 18¹⁶

Pneumonia is not only a high mortality but also a high burden of treatment. Pneumonia was the third most commonly reported disease in South Korea in 2017, and patients with pneumonia paid more than 2,202,000 wins.⁶ The company recommends pneumococcal vaccination for adults aged 65 years and over, for chronic patients with chronic diseases and immune deficiencies, using revised guidance on adult immunization recommendations.¹⁶

Particularly for chronic patients over the age of 18, it is recommended to inject 13 pneumococcal conjugate vaccines between two pneumococcal vaccines to prevent effective pneumonia. Healthy adult adults 65 years of age or older with 13 pneumococcal protein conjugation vaccines or 23 It is recommended to infect pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine.¹⁶
