Curiosity rover again on the move | Room

The NASA Mars Curiosity Rover travels and directs science again after experiencing anomalous memory in September. Last weekend, the rover drove about 197 feet (60 meters) onto Lake Orcadie's website, pressing its total distance of 12 miles (20 kilometers). It was Curiosity's longest-running drive since the memory abnormality occurred on September 15, 2018. On October 3rd, Rover switches to a replacement computer called the Side-A computer.

As with many spacecraft, Curiosity was developed with two superfluous computers – in this case called Side-A and Side-B computers – so that it can continue to work if someone feels like it. When checking several options, JPL engineers recommended that the rover switch from B to the A side.

A team of knowledge engineers in the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory continues to diagnose anomalies on the Side B computer. The curiosity of using the original computer on the side, after it landed on Mars in August 2012, began to use the computer. Five years ago, NASA began to experience hardware and software issues, leaving the rover incompatible and emptied the battery. At that time the team successfully switched to side B. After that, the engineer diagnosed and quarantined Side A memory that was affected to make the computer available again for the mission. Steven Lee of JPL is a Curiosity Deputy Project Manager. Lee said in a statement:

At this point, we are confident that we will return to all operations, but it's too early to say how soon. We are working at Side A today, but it can take time to fully understand the root cause of the problem and develop solutions for Side B's memory.

We spent the past week checking Side A and preparing for a swap. Of course, it's possible to run a Side-A mission on a computer if we really need it. But our plan is to switch back to Step B as soon as we can fix the problem to use more memory.
