Archbishop Abūne Gabriel passed away on Saturday at his patriarchate in Addis Ababa, according to sources in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
In the latter role, he served as archbishop of the dioceses of Sidama, Gideo, and Burji. He has not served since October this year due to an unspecified illness.
Prior to serving in the aforementioned diocese, he served in various dioceses, including Eritrea (before it seceded from Ethiopia), Jerusalem, and North America. He was appointed archbishop in 1979 during the reign of the third patriarch, Abune Teklehamanmanota.
He studied theology in Russia and the United States and earned a doctorate. degree in Christology.
On Sunday, starting at 10 a.m., he will sleep at Menbere Tsebaot Kidist Selassie (Trinity Cathedral) in Addis Ababa.
