Finally. After feeling like an eternity, Toyota has finally pulled the A90 generation Supra Coupe cover at the 2019 NAIAS Detroit Auto Show. The new sportsman shares a lot of his DNA with the recently opened BMW Z4 but is just a coup.
Continue reading absolutely everything we know about the new Toyota Supra.
What is it?
If you have been living under a rock for the last ten years, Toyota has long referred to Supra's return. The road to the official opening point of the A90 is frankly tiring; it was probably the longest and cheapest car teaser campaign in recent history, and one of us CARs is very happy to see you back.
So, the Toyota Supra is a brand new sports coupe from Japan and the fifth that carries the name Supras. Toyota worked with BMW to get it from the ground, and Munich worked on the next generation of Z4 roadster.
Both sides have a platform and engines, but visually there are much more differences than similarities. Toyota says the style is "Condensed Extreme" in the design language, and it shows and corrects the stretch cover, the double bubble and the back of the roof.
The condensed extreme name refers to a short wheelbase, low and wide footprint, and massive wheels that fill the onion arches. In Europe, there will be 19-inch black and metal changes. The headlamps are stylized while the grille, front and bonnet are pierced with many cooling openings to feed the engine, brakes and air radiators. The car's footprint is one that seems to be called the 'Gold ratio' to handle dexterity – the ratio between wheelbase length and wheel tread – with bookmarks of 1.5 and 1.6. Supra is in the middle of an explosion 1.55.
"We wanted it to be done in such a short time that you recognize it, so we went through many discussions with the car designer, and that is how we came up with the design," says Chief Engineer Tetsuya Tada. “There were some of the design samples taken from the previous Supras. For example, the rear wing where we had this volume; we said it was a sexy part of design, so we tried to get some pointers. ”
Give me the engines and specs!
Currently, only one engine is official: 3.0 liter straight six turbo engines with 335 bhp and 369 lb feet of GR Supra. If these energy figures are known, it's because they are the same as the BMW Z4 M40i. And many other 40i BMW models like M140i and M240i.
Supra that the power goes to the rear wheels using the eight-speed automatic transmission – so far there are no manual versions. Toyota claims that GR Supra will reach 62mph in 4.3 seconds. There is also a launch control and, like the GT86, a train control 'track' setting that provides less electronic interference. Euro-spec Supras will also be equipped with active differential drive wheels.
Other engine variants will decrease when Supra is sold, similar to its Z4 stablemate. At the end of any spectrum there will be a Supra base that will use the BMW B48d 2.0 liter turbocharged 4c engine. A heavy GRMN model is also available.
Other news in the pipeline could still be a guide, as Toyota has already developed it. However, the decision to offer it is still very much in the air, and it is produced in the manual box, it can only be available on the right-hand drive cars: good news for the Japanese and British people, but not for the American or Continental Europe market.
"[A manual ‘box] it has not yet been decided, and depending on the feedback from the market, we will decide whether we need to implement a manual gearbox, ”Kai said in an interview in an interview with Auto.
“We've developed it, yes, it's hardware ready. Right-hand drive? Yes of course. It must be purchased in Japan, which is the right-hand driving market. "So the jury is …
But I mean …
Yes, we thought the manual was out of the question. A few months ago, an interview with Toyota's chief engineer Then and the Japanese magazine Info Seek say there will be no manuals. When asked in the spring of 2018, if the new Supra came with a manual gearbox, then Tada replied, "It is not at the moment; it's just a two-clutch transmission. ”
Then he also said that this is partly because the new car can generate too much torque for the manual gearbox. However, since then we have learned that the BMW Z4 will offer a manual option in the future. Watch this place …
Will it feel like a fit sports car?
Engineers point out that the 50:50 weight distribution was the main goal of the overall Toyota-BMW rear-wheel drive architecture, and argues that torsion rigidity exceeds the LF-A composite material, which proves well the handling and durability path. However, cars must work very differently according to the engineers concerned.

Toyota is confident that we will immediately be able to observe the differences between the two. "We use a completely different approach in terms of calibration and other areas," then CAR convinced. "You will feel like another car with different tastes."
Since the Z4 prototype we've been running seems to be a sporty, elegant convertible, Supra will be a more targeted sports car. "We have not considered, for example, practicality or comfort," says Then, adding that Z4 is designed for a completely different audience.
Let's talk about Toyota Supra interior and equipment
It's a properly built cab driver with enough Toyota bits to make it less visible when the BMW bits are. Like headlights, iDrive screen and central console switches, gear selector and air convectors.
Toyota has confirmed that there are two different variants of the new A90 Supra trim. First it turned out that the GR model has standard and Pro models, but the latter is much richer.
Active is equipped with two-zone air conversion, key-opening and launching, adaptive LED lights, adaptive cruise, a huge set of safety kits and an 8.8-inch information and entertainment system. Alcantara seats are also standard.
As a Premium, you have leather seats, a JBL audio upgrade, a headset and a cordless phone charger. Everything is very trendy.
For those who did not get enough of the teaser campaign, Toyota also offers an exclusive A90 version to mark the car's modern camouflage when events such as the 2018 Goodwood Speed of Speed happen. The A90 Edition will be custom-made Storm Gray matt, matt black alloys, red leather trim, and a set that fits into the Premium category. Only 90 will be available.
Together with BMW: Why Z4 and Supra share DNA
It's no secret that BMW and Toyota merged to create a new Z4 / Supra platform, and the reasons for the collaboration were mostly financial. This reflects the decline in the global market for sports cars, with two production giants merging to produce the scale effects needed to reach the project from the ground.

However, the initial desire to save costs and split parts seems to have meant that the joint project started less than the perfect start. "We started the discussion with BMW, saying," Let's increase the amount of common parts, we will do everything that is effective "- that was the starting point,” explains Tad-san. "It was not quite appropriate and there was one case when BMW came out and said – what do you want? You seem to be compromising for efficiency.
Then, Toyota and BMW started to develop the individual cars they wanted, and then searched for common spaces where it was useful to share the hardware.
New in Supra motorsport
Before the official production car was unveiled, Toyota has come to the left, right and center of racing concepts. At the 2019 Tokyo Auto Show, Toyota demonstrated the Super GT concept.
If you're not familiar with the Super GT, think of the silhouette with DTM aero, close to the LMP2 speed, and you're pretty much. Last year's championship was won by Honda NSX with Jenson Button and Naoki Yamamoto, sharing their driving responsibilities, and also Nissan Jann Mardenborough. In essence, it is an important and very popular sport in Japan.
The new car will bring the Toyota marque back to the top GT500 Super GT after a long absence; In recent years Lexus has taken part in the series and is currently using its extreme version of the RC F Coupe.
What's more, with the change of WEC rules, Toyota seems to double in strength class. Along with the new GRMN racing concept, which has arrived in the new high-level sport, the new Supra will also be completed in the GTE class. That means Toyota will be represented in both classes.
And it looks like Toyota takes the GTE class very seriously; we were told that the designers have gone back and forth between the racing car and the manufacturing car, making sure that the GTE version had the best possible platform for work. Most road air intakes were strategically placed on the GTE version.
This year's Le Man 24-hour Supra Engineer Manager then confirmed that the car will compete in the WEC GTE class, but now we know it will be a race for NASCAR. Toyota has confirmed that Supra will compete in the Nascar Xfinity Series, replacing the current Camry silhouette. And you'll be able to see Supra Nascar on the road on February 16, 2019.
"When you talk about Toyota and cool cars, Supra is the first thing that comes to mind for many car enthusiasts," said Ed Lauke, vice president of marketing at Toyota. “Supra's return to production is a tremendous news, but now we'll see this iconic sports car back in American motorsport. From a marketing point of view, it is important to have a racing car that refers to the dynamism and character of its exhibition space. ”
Of course, the Supras Nascar version has only approximate silhouette and design features in the car, but there are still some interesting details. In particular, the Nascar racing front and rear lights reflect the Supra Racing concept that we saw this year as well as the other prototypes we've seen. At this point, we have a very good idea of how the new Supra will look.
