Detroit, MI – January 14, 2019 – Subaru Tecnica International (STI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Subaru Corporation, today introduced STI S209, the first S-line STI product manufactured exclusively for the US market. As an S-line product, STI S209 includes power, processing, aerodynamics, and driver turnaround improvements, and

undergoes final assembly in Kiryu, Japan, where it receives engine modification and body modification, which generally requires it to be approved by the US STI; thus S209 is considered to be the first “STI-built” Subaru that is sold in the US. The S209 has a high-performance tradition for STI-built models that were exclusive to the Japanese domestic market – the S201 of 2000 with the 20120 S208.

Focused on high-performance driving, the S209 is inspired by technology and the transfer of technology from STI's most advantageous track – WRX STI Nürburgring Challenge, which won the SP3T class at Nürburgring in 24 hours 2018, marking the fifth time the STI SP3T class was in awe endurance race. The S209, like the Nürburgring Challenge racing car, is wearing an extended wide body treatment that extends the vehicle's overall width to 72.4 inches or 1.7 inches wider than the standard WRX STI. Convex wings are equipped with wider front / rear rails (+ 0.6 front / rear) and 265/35 Dunlop GT600A summer tires wrapped around a 19 x 9-inch BBS alloy wheel. The new tire, which Dunlop only developed for S209, is an essential maximum side handle of the car, which exceeds 1.0 g. The front wing holes provide additional engine cooling, while the rear wing holes prevent air turbulence to reduce traction. Under the S209, the wider body is specially designed for Bilstein® shock absorbers, stiff coil springs, 20mm rear stabilizer rod and cushion type front / rear side connections. The S209 includes brackets for the front cross-section and rear lower frame, as well as the Nürburgring racing car, flexible front-tower tower and flexible front / rear fastening bars. Unlike conventional rigid rods, the elastic tower bar is split and connected with the cushion in the center of the ball center to make it move longitudinally, helping to stiffen the car body sideways. The result is an optimum tire grip in combination with an appropriate longitudinal drive. At the same time, the towing stiffeners apply the tension between the housing and the cross-section to optimize the chassis flexibility, improving stability during turning and providing better driving, handling and steering response. Other Nürburgring racing technology technologies hiding up to S209: front, rear and sideways under the spoiler; front bumper boxes; and carbon fiber roof panel and rear wing.

The carefully engineered version of the legendary EJ25 2.5-liter turbocharged engine BXER engine moves to S209. Equipped with the HKS® STI turbocharger, the EJ25 is powered by approximately 341 horsepower, partly due to a larger turbine and compressor (6 and 8 percent, respectively, compared to WRX STI), and a maximum pressure of 18.0 psi. (16.2 psi WRX STI). The outstanding BOXER engine uses fake pistons and connecting rods, which are both lighter and stronger, for outstanding display of the S209 serial number plate. To deliver more air to the EJ25, the S209 uses a high-flow intake system with a new inlet channel, a tapered air filter, a silicone turbo inlet and a junction from 2004-07 WRX STI, an intercooler water dispenser system that reduces the temperature of the intercooler using manually operated steering wheel blades. More air requires more fuel, so the S209 receives a new high-flow fuel pump, larger fuel injectors and an STI-controlled engine control module. High performance silencers provide 17% less airflow resistance and use about 4.1 pounds. Finally, larger hand polished stainless steel exhaust tips – 101 mm in diameter – provide aggressive looks and acoustics.

The S209 receives several tweaks to pick it up from other STI sedans. The STI badge replaces the traditional Subaru star cluster in the center of the D-steering wheel wrapped in Ultrasuede® with silver stitches that are transferred to the center console storage box lid. The S209 serial number plate is located on the central console, and the S209 emblems adorn the passenger side dash and the Recaro® front bucket seat headrests with new silver inserts. Outside the special S209 emblems are attached to the front grille and wings as well as to the rear decoded.

Only about 200 STI S209 units will be built exclusively for the US. Available external color / BBS wheel combinations will be WR Blue Pearl / Gray Wheels and Crystal White Pearl / Gold wheels. Pricing will be announced closer to the date of sale at the end of 2019.
