Microsoft has discovered a new icon set to be launched by Office applications. In the next couple of months, Office 365 customers will see their apps move to the new icons, as Microsoft continues to refresh the look and feel of the core productivity suite.
The last time the Microsoft Office applications got new icons was 2013, and the same icon set was also used by Office 2016 and the permanently licensed Office 2019. Since then, Office has gained significantly more mobile devices with iOS and Android apps. has increased the presence on the Internet, it has added many collaborative features, and many of its users are switching from permanent licenses to the continuously upgraded Office 365.
The new icons are meant to reflect this change somehow. Letters that have customized each icon are sized, but the space used to display a highly stylized representation of the application. The colors are a bit brighter as well. Oddly, designs already have some controversy; OneDrive does not have letters at all (it's just a cloud), and Skype uses old proportions with a letter that is much bigger than any other.
Overall, I think they look nice enough, but unfortunately they do not fix the big mistake that was made in 2013. The Outlook icon stays stubbornly blue when all longtime Outlook users know it should be orange gold. I have forever lost the perspective between the blue icon of the sea – Word, Edge, OneDrive, Teams, Yammer and Skype – and I'm ready to return to the days of golden glory. Unfortunately, Microsoft has ignored my basis.
