2017 is the year to be remembered by the 5,000 largest Belgian companies: their turnover has grown by 10%, while profits by 5%.
Payments with the greatest amount of money are banks, according to the latest trends in Top, which analyzed the number of these companies. The total balance sheet total is 675 billion euros, an increase of 9.8% over 2016. Total net profit has increased by 5% to 24.2 billion euros.
If profit does not reflect exactly the same trend as turnover, it is increasing competition, said Tony Coenjaert, from Trends Top. Therefore, margins are shorter.
The ultimate beneficiary of the profit is KBC Bank, with EUR 2.6 billion, which is twice as much as in 2016. BNP Paribas Fortis follows with billions of net profit. KBC Groep, a KBC holding company, is also third in a row, with nearly a billion euros. Belfius is also top 10, but ING is just outside of it.
Toyota Motor Europe last year was also the largest company in Belgium with a turnover of 25 billion euros.
The most important employer is still HR Rail, a legal person for railway staff (SNCB and Infrabel), employing 30,763 people. Bpost follows 23,393 employees and Colruyt with 16,929 employees.
