Red ribbon area: Aids-Hilfe Styria travels around the area

Aidshilfe Steiermark travels with the motto "I Want to Know!" through Weiz County.

In 2017 there were 58 people in Styria who were the first to be diagnosed with HIV infection. It is 26 percent more than in 2016. In order to draw attention to this unpleasant development and increase awareness of HIV and AIDS, the Aidshilfe Styria visits the Weiz District.

High Therapy Costs

40 percent of the diagnosis is late. This means that victims have been infected by the virus for many years, thus impeding their health and possibly endangering others carelessly. Due to the further development of treatment options, today's infected people can lead to almost normal life, but the problem remains that HIV infection or AIDS patients are stigmatized in our society, explains Manfred Rupps, Head of Aidshilfe Steiermark. In addition, the average cost of caring for an HIV-infected person would be between 400,000 and 500,000 euros throughout his life.

District Tour Weiz

Until the World AIDS Day, which will take place on December 1, Aidshilfe Styria, Weiz County, wants to go on a journey "I Want to Know!" raise awareness and inform people through lectures, free and anonymous tests, poster campaigns and red ribbon public buildings.
During the lecture "Aid, is it something else for us?" will be discussed on 15 November by the Paracelsusapotheke Weiz and on 27 November by Kulturkeller Gleisdorf on this topic. Health Advisor Christopher Drexler underlines that the disease should not be forgotten: "Given the treatment options, HIV infection is now curable, but we must not reduce the disease."

Anonymous test

In Graz, you can check Aidshilfe Steiermark anonymously and free of charge. Test result is obtained within three to five days. Quick test allows the result after half an hour. Currently, 80 percent of the tested people are from Graz and its surroundings, visiting areas where they want to ease access to HIV testing. "I hope the district tour will raise awareness of this important topic and reduce the impact of people affected by infection," says Rupp.
