Toyota HiLux v Ford Ranger v Mitsubishi Triton

Australia's obsession with jobs does not indicate signs of decline. Last year, Toyota HiLux and Ford's Ranger were the country's first and second largest selling car. In December there were no less than four.

The recent arrival of the Mitsubishi Triton revolves around HiLux and Ranger. Triton is the closest challenging dynamic duo, and Mitsubishi finds it difficult to break the pair by launching his new model with sharp, sharp and convincing security stories.

By the end of June, it costs $ 50,990 on the road, which is considerably cheaper than the HiLux SR5 ($ 56,440 ride) and the Ranger XLT ($ 55,690 ride). For a deal, there is a seven-year warranty of 150,000km.

This is a convincing offer on paper, especially if you look at the list of equipment. Standard safety technology includes standalone emergency braking, lane departure and blind spot warning, automatic high-speed immersion and rear-end alarm. No other ute price is close to that.

Leather chairs – optional XLT and SR5 – are standard and include seat heaters, expected to enter markets that look 5m. Barrel, starts in winter.

The standard also includes Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, front and rear parking sensors and power adjustment for the driver's seat. The only remarkable drawbacks are digital speed and satnav, which is the issue of remote area owners with insufficient phone coverage.

The salon is well equipped for connected production. There are two USB, 12V and HDMI inputs on the front and two USB and 12V plug-ins on the second line. The roof-mounted openings pump air into the rear passenger faces.

Mitsubishi says the cabin has more padding and soft touch material, although it is surprising that the padding is on the door instead of the armrests that are solid plastic.

None of these products are what you call the high price – you don't have to look far to see solid glossy plastic – but inside Triton it's smart enough, with an unusual carbon fiber imitation to lift your mood.

Mitsubishi says it has turned the engine to better respond to the sign and adapted the suspension to provide better comfort in the city. It is a medium-term update, not a major overhaul, so the changes are minimal.

The Triton engine is not on the right to improve or encourage it, but it's alive enough for the sign and relatively quiet diesel. The journey can be staggering in terms of corrugation, and steering is not as accurate as the rest here, but it is predictable enough with both bitumen and dirt.


The Ranger mid-term update was carried out in September and was headed by a new four-cylinder diesel engine that corresponds to 10-speed automation. It costs $ 1,200 more than the still available 3.2-liter / six-speed car, but it's worth it – it has more power and torque, and it's also more sophisticated than the old one.

The XLT is equipped with a new engine, which is $ 55,690, and is a big jump in prices over Triton. The $ 1700 security package provides automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane saving assistants / lane departure alerts, and auto lights. Leather seats, $ 1650, are manually adjustable.

The inside of the Ranger looks a little more, and there are two digital readings in front of the driver, one of which is equipped with digital speed. Satnav is standard, the armrests are padded and have a couple of clever touches – a standard household 230V plug for the laptop, as well as lighting and a 12V output in the rear load area.

The information and entertainment unit is user friendly and the central console is cooled. However, there is no rear vents.

Ford might have a small lighting facility at a price, but it shines on the road. It is easily stabilized from these three on the dirt road, swelling the rakes and corrugated with compelling inspiration. Steering is the toughest and most communicative of this trio and provides the most comfortable driving experience.

The engine is a step ahead of the other two here. It is quieter, more responsive and more efficient for fuel, partly thanks to technology that shuts off the engine to save fuel.

The extra power and torque are not as prominent as it appears on paper, partly because the Ranger is about 150 kg heavier than its competitors here. It can pull more than others and has a higher load.


If Triton sells at a price and Ranger for a durable look, HiLux sells its reputation for reliability and free ownership. Very recently, there has been a small hit due to problems with the diesel particle filter. There is a fix, and the problem, of course, has not reduced HiLux's sales.

The SR5 cabin is well-screwed and user-friendly. Despite the fact that it has not been substantially updated since 2015, it still looks fashionable, courtesy of the large, high-resolution center screen that dominates the dash. It does not fulfill some mod-cons, including Apple's CarPlay / Android Auto and digital speed.

Our test car had a $ 2,000 premium leather interior, heated front seats with electric adjustment for the driver. It costs a trip up to $ 58,440.

Like the Ranger, there is a cool central console with a household plug, and HiLux outperforms Ford with rear vents. But the connection points are a bit switched on – just one USB front with two 12 V outputs.

The bath liner costs extra, but, unlike Triton, the tow bar is standard (including the Ranger).

HiLux is not filled with dirt and is the least safe of these three. It is easily hampered by holes and cracks, sometimes skipping larger bumps. Plus, the steering wheel is more like Triton and the engine is a little more sophisticated. Its motorway is quieter than the Mitsubishi.

HiLux is significantly less than the speed ahead of security. Automatic emergency braking is not available in any model and there is no other Ranger and Triton driver assistance. A vehicle of about $ 60,000 to balance work with family responsibilities is not good enough.


HiLux has a loyal, low operating cost and a stable resale value, but it has declined as competitors have updated. Ranger is the best ride with a comfortable margin, but we're trying to see the value compared to Triton, which has an impressive standard security kit, generous warranties, cheap service costs and fast price cuts
